Vietnam Passenger Car Oil Market May 2026: Castrol Holds the Top Spot in the Distribution Channel

Vietnam’s passenger car engine oil (PCO) market recorded a slight correction in May 2026 versus April, but the year-to-date trend (YTD-26) remains positive compared with the same period in 2025. Here is the overview from the May 2026 POS Tracking Topline report.

Market Overview: Short-Term Correction, Solid Fundamentals

In May 2026, Vietnam’s PCO market saw a mild month-on-month correction — driven mainly by product price pressure affecting consumer purchase decisions in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The Aftermarket channel (shops, garages, parts retailers) also recorded a slight monthly decline, largely from Ho Chi Minh City.

Viewed on a year-to-date basis, however: YTD-26 continues to grow well versus the same period in 2025 — indicating that underlying demand remains solid. The May correction was a timing effect, not a signal of structural decline.

Castrol: An Increasingly Secure No. 1 in the Aftermarket

In a market contested by more than 70 brands spanning the mass to premium segments, Castrol continued to consolidate its leadership of the Aftermarket channel nationwide.

Key highlights for May 2026:

  • Castrol gained share across nearly all segments — from Mineral and Synthetic Tech to fully synthetic lines, demonstrating comprehensive portfolio coverage and consistent consumer appeal.
  • In Ho Chi Minh City, Castrol gained share in the Mineral and Synthetic Tech segments, while Eneos and Mobil also showed positive momentum.
  • In Hanoi, Castrol further extended its lead over competitors across the entire Aftermarket, including the premium Full Synthetic segment.
  • On a YTD-26 basis, Castrol maintains the strongest share position in the nationwide Aftermarket channel — a gap that trailing brands such as Mobil, Motul, and Havoline will find hard to close.

The OEM Channel: Volatility and Opportunity

In the OEM channel (authorized car dealerships), May 2026 showed more pronounced movement. Toyota’s share has declined steadily since March, while Hyundai and TotalEnergies improved. Castrol recorded a recovery in Hanoi this month — a positive signal after a period of intense competition in this channel.

The Competitive Landscape: A Market Splitting in Two Directions

Vietnam’s PCO market is diverging along two clear dimensions:

The first is product segmentation — demand is gradually shifting from mineral oils toward semi-synthetic and fully synthetic (Full Synthetic) products, in step with the modernization of Vietnam’s passenger car fleet.

The second is distribution channel — the Aftermarket still accounts for the majority of volume and remains where brands build real competitive advantage through outlet coverage, service quality, and the strength of their distributor network.

IDS — Castrol PCO Distributor for the Ho Chi Minh City Region

As the official Castrol distributor for passenger car oil (PCO) in the Ho Chi Minh City region, IDS delivers Castrol products directly to the city’s network of garages, parts shops, and vehicle service dealers. As Castrol continues to gain Aftermarket share, the role of local distribution grows ever more critical — ensuring products are always available, at the right time, at the right point of sale.
